Lonely Highway

Cover of 1994 Stephin Merritt song (Magnetic Fields).

Another road song. Intro is a bit unsteady. Otherwise smooth, less jumping on the one beat. In the original the intro riff is repeated throughout the song, along with another riff. I’ll play it that way someday. I forgot to let the outro’s 2nd F chord ring out fully for a measure. I performed the song for the Gilroy Ukulele Jam and S.F. Ukulele Rebellion. Technical problems prevented recording, the video above was done separately. On the rebellion chat, I was informed I had a Johnny Cash like voice. Cash’s kind of song. Merritt must have been channeling Cash when he wrote it. I like the concept of saving years, but not of being a speed bump. Chart.

Merritt got under my radar for decades. Al Wood of the Ukulele Hunt website called him out for playing a baritone ukulele out of tune. That piqued my curiosity. I found the song and a treasure trove of ukulele ready tunes to cover. One reviewer said Merritt is in love with his own shtick. Well it works for him. His bands are Magnetic Fields, 6ths, and Future Bible Verses.
