My first exposure to this song was Brett McQueen’s strumming course, as an example of chucking. The technique is fretting hand over open chords, which requires some getting used to. Having been introduced to chucking that way, it’s what I use. Strumming hand chucking is more common. There are copious you-tube tutorials available. So I could sing and play it in a week’s turn around time, I slowed the song down 123 BPM to 115 BPM, The song has lots of lyrics, so I added some short instrumental breaks to catch my breath. My strumming pattern is a simplification of the original (that also chucks). I played “5 Years Time” at the Gilroy Ukulele Jam Zoom and Ukulele Rebellion’s Bronco Billy’s Zoom jam. Good at Gilroy, a little unsteady at Bronco Billy’s; I got off the 1 beat at some point. Otherwise kept time. Chart. Following a participant’s question at BB, there was a lively and useful discussion of chucking techniques. Later, there was a fine arrangement of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” that included chucking and a recorder or something similar.
