Mark commented on my last weeks post. I happened across Craig Robertson’s cover and decided to give it a try; a glance around the various ukulele song sheet sources indicated zero Prince songs. I pluck the bass strings of my low G Farallon ukulele to mimic the last verse’s original recording. Gilroy and Bronco Billy participants heard it. I was concerned the verse would sound like Acappella. How well it works musically is not clear to me. The Farallon features new Aquila strings, which improved the low G intonation over the replaced Worth strings. The Aquila low G is wound as opposed to the solid Worth string. I took the song on Zoom tour to:
Gilroy Ukulele Jam
Gilroy was doing 2020 favorites. Karen opened with “Three Little Birds.” Linda covered John Denver’s “Calypso,” “Snowbird,” Annie musical’s “Tomorrow,” and “White Sandy Beach.” Karen covered Phillip Phillip’s “Home,” the rhythmically tricky “If I Had A Hammer.” And “Long Gone Lonesome Blues.” The round-robin was “I Love My Rooster.” Glen covered “Up The Lazy River.” Curt performed Donovan’s “Catch the Wind,” complete with harmonica part.
Ukulele Rebellion / Bronco Billy’s
Mary led “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve,” “Auld Lang Syne,” “Hit the Road Jack,” as a send-off to 2020, and the Grateful Dead’s “Ripple.” Mark covered the Youngblood’s “Get Together.” Mary returned with the Ramone’s “I Wanna Be Sedated.” I went to a couple of Ramones concerts back in the day. Jay led “Let There Be Peace On Earth” and “When A Child Is Born.” Mary led the “Stray Cat Strut / Hit The Road Jack” mashup.
