Substitute

Cover of The Who’s Substitute

Ukulele Rebellion’s May theme is the British Invasion, right in my aging boomer wheelhouse. The line “Substitute you for my mom, at least I’ll get my washing done” has always jumped out at me for some reason. The Who songs seem uncommon in ukulele club songbooks, so I am confident I will represent this song and The Who on my own. I felt it essential to get the opening chord riff right, so I did it this way: D at 7650, D at 7655, A at 7454, G at 7775, then back to D at 7655, all staccato. The riff recurs later in the song. A Keely Compressor Plus pedal debuts for this recorded cover with the blend turned full and sustain set halfway. I used the compressor for the South Bay Acoustic Music Group and Monterey Ukulele Club Zoom Jam earlier. The Who’s “I’m One” was covered at the same South Bay Acoustic Music Group Zoom; what a coincidence. The compression gives the Risa electric more impact. I use my fingers, not a pick, so the compression helps tighten the sound. Using a pick is on my learning list. The bass is me using a Taylor Mini Bass. The drums are provided by GarageBand. Some reverb is provided at the mixer.
