Box Of Rain

“Box Of Rain” cover

Thanks. to Kevin Wacknov for the sound check. The Grateful Dead song Box Of Rain is my choice to lead at the San Francisco Ukulele Rebellion’s celebrating musicians Zoom: “Let’s remember some of the people the music world lost in 2024 by playing their music.” Phil Lesh, the Dead’s bass player, passed away in 2024, co-wrote this song with Robert Hunter. I have always been fond of it. I was never a Dead Head; I had albums “American Beauty” and “Workingman’s Dead” back in the day. I enjoyed them occasionally, generally though somewhat mellow for my taste. I saw them live once at a 1976 Oakland Coliseum “Day On The Green” show where they were co-billed with the Who. I always thought that it was an odd pairing. I used the Kanilea for the Ukuele West Festival Saturday Zoom jam because of some level-setting concerns. The problems went away later at recording time. I will have to figure out what was going on at that time. For the recording and Ukulele Rebellion, I used Klos 8-string to get a rich sound. The Taylor Mini-E Bass provided the bass, and GarageBand provided the drums. The 4/4 to 2/4 time signature changes put the kick drum on the three-beat. A GarageBand limitation. I stumbled over the lyrics a bit, but the rendering was satisfying.
