I brought back an early open mic song originally performed at The Poor House Bistro in San Jose in 2013. The chords are more accurate this time, and I have 7 years of experience as well. I first became aware of this song while listening to the DJs Richard Gosset and Beverly Wilshire on KFOG (or was it KSAN?) in the early 80s. Having to turn songs around in a week rather than a month does not leave me time to get the intros and instrumentals. The piano plays around a
G chord in the intro, with a guitar adding a figure at the end of each measure. I’ll return to it someday. The Bb sus2 was noticed at the Gilroy Jam. It has a melancholy sound that fits the song.

South Bay Acoustic Music Group
Three original compositions were featured, as well as Electric Light Orchestra’s “Telephone Line” and Wilco’s “Love Is Everywhere”. Jay performed Harry Nilsson’s “Without You”. Suzi performed Dan Hick’s “Sweet Heart”.

Gilroy Ukulele Jam
The 50s, 60s theme continued. “Bye Bye Love” was the rounder. “Blue Velvet” sounded really good.

Ukulele Rebellion
Jay performed the Show Boat song“Old Man River,” using his baritone voice. He sang the original lyrics and Paul Robison’s subversive re-write.

I also checked in at Oakland Ukulele Jam. A weekend session finally came around I was able to attend. Bob Power’s tutorials are here. Richard Thompson’s 1952 Black Lightning was featured, a song I initially brought to Oakland Ukulele Jam live session a few years ago, and ended up in their songbook; Bob enhanced it a bit with some suspended chords. I had heard the song initially at a high school reunion, where the class band the T-Birds played nostalgic numbers. Doug, one of the band’s guitarists, performed the song solo. Other songs performed: Further On (Up the Road), Honeysuckle Rose, My Favorite Things, Peaceful Easy Feeling, Rocky Mountain High, Rocky Top, This Little Light Of Mine.

  1. A lot of cool stuff happened at the Ukulele Rebellion Zoom jam after you apparently left. For example, we sang Aloha ‘Oe – all three verses, and in Hawaiian – to celebrate the anniversary of Queen Lili’uokalani’s birth on Sepember 2; Mike (flute), Stephanie (violin) and Jeremy (melodica and a wind instrument that can sound like a trumpet, a bass, or a saxophone, among others) all played wonderful solos on songs; and I sang an original song called “My Garden.”
