“Hold On” Revisited

Ukulele cover of “Hold On” the 1999 Waits / Brennan song

I thought I might try another take to build on my previous effort.  I hadn’t brought this song to a couple of venues, so it was a good opportunity.  This time, I used a Logic Pro session player to generate a bass line based on the chord progression. I left it alone and didn’t try to play it myself, so you could hear what Logic Pro came up with directly.  The verses are irregular, with variable chord counts leading in.  It took more practice than usual to stay with the bass line.   I used the low G Blackbird Farallon this time, and a different, I think more appropriate strum. I allowed a 2nd channel for the ukulele pickup to reinforce what the mic receives.  My vocals were not overwhelmed, though I had to make sure I stayed at a good volume.   I used a Triton inline compressor, cranked all the way up, ahead of the mic preamp to tame the mic’d ukulele transients.  I liked the way this turned out.
