“Clay Pigeons” live at the Wild Eye Pub

“Clay Pideons” cover

Muireann Bradley’s cover of this Blaze Foley song drifted by in my YouTube recommendations. I gave it a listen, then added it to a playlist for a later cover or download consideration.  It grew on me after a few listens.   I was reminded of an Amtrak trip to Denver years ago, where for a time I was seated across from a Mormon lady with her 2 toddlers crawling all over her. We had a pleasant conversation.  “I could build me a castle of memories just to have somewhere to go” – I like that line. I don’t remember hearing the song before, though sometimes I wonder what I have forgotten over the years.  It is well known that John Prine had also covered it, and some in the audience thought it was his.   I loved hearing the audience sing and play along.  Ann H., who often played bass with the San Jose club, was there, as was my friend Jeff, who let me know about this event.  He also made a quality video, but with a more distant view.  My wife Lisa took the video I am using.   Finger picking with a live audience is a confidence builder. I practiced the previous Tuesday at  Cindy Y.’s Zoom jam, so that had to be helpful.   I was concerned about the picking being heard at this in-person venue, but the sound system was excellent.  Clay Pigeons is my June song of the month, so I’ll be making the rounds with it.
